Lamborghini launches Aventador Roadster at Rs4.77 crore

Super sports car maker Lamborghini, which today rolled out the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster, said it expects a higher growth for its super luxury cars in the domestic market. The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster is priced at Rs4.77 crore, ex-showroom Delhi.
"Last year we achieved 21% growth here. This year, we expect a higher growth," Automobili Lamborghini sales manager for Southeast Asia & Pacific, Andrea Baldi, told reporters here without disclosing a target. Lamborghini is a company of the German auto major Volkswagen Group. The new Roadster will go on sale from mid-2013 at its two dealers, he added.
Stating that the domestic market has good potential for the super luxury cars, Baldi said, "This market will see steady and continuous growth in the years to come."
India will grow faster than some of the current markets in the next five years, he said.
On the new car, Baldi said the Aventador Roadster is the most exciting supercar that embodies performance, design, technology and engineering excellence. I am sure it will further develop our presence in this market." The super luxury car maker had entered the country in 2005 and today it operates two outlets-- one each in Delhi and Mumbai. "We are considering other cities also, mainly Chennai and Bangalore. But there are some challenges like finding the right dealer and infrastructure," he said.
Stating that India is slowly accepting the super cars as a means to realise aspirations, he said, "We are hopeful of the success we can achieve here."

Nokia Lumia 920 incompatible with India’s 4G network

Nokia Lumia 920, the Finnish manufacturer's flagship phone, will not work on India's 4Gnetwork, even though the version headed to this country will support 9 LTE bands. The website of Nokia India lists the bands that the device will work on, including LTE bandwidths. The list does not name LTE 2300 bandwidth, which is the standard in India, even though the smartphone will work on LTE 2100 and LTE 2600 networks.

This means that buyers of the device in the country will not be able to enjoy ultrafast download speeds on mobile networks on their Lumia 920. Nokia India has confirmed that the listing on site is correct, thus ruling out all possibilities of 4G in the country. However, this may not be a major issue for most prospective buyers in the country since 4G is so far available in only a few cities and even 3G is trying to catch up.

In India and China, Time Division Duplex (TDD) network is used for LTE. However, it is not a commonly used format and most manufacturers do not make phones meant for it. As of now, Huawei Ascend P1 remains the only smartphone compatible with Indian LTE band.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III review

Canon’s latest full frame camera EOS 5D Mark III has to follow the footsteps of its illustrious predecessor. Is it a worthy upgrade and does it offer enough to please the serious professional’s thirst for more, while rewarding him with some arm-chair features? Our test review has the answers.

FEATURES OVERVIEW
The review unit was delivered to our test bench with a 24-105 mm F4 IS USM lens. The EOS 5D Mark III is a 22.3 mega pixels full frame 35mm camera. Unlike the predecessor’s 3.9 fps, the Mark III offers a shooting speed of 6 frames per second, and loads up 61 Auto focus points and a 63 zone metering system. The camera’s shutter life is 150,000 cycles.
Canon has reworked almost every bit of the software and there are many hardware additions too in the 5D Mark III. It is almost a complete overhaul of the 5D Mark II which it replaces.
The new camera has many novel features, like HDR capture , HD movie capture, multi exposure mode, 100 per cent viewfinder, touch-response rear dials for video controls and a new 'rating' button which makes image/video selection on the go possible, to name a few.
Lightweight but hardy, the 5D Mark III manages to combine what would seem to be opposite ends of the spectrum of users. It expands the level of manual intervention and settings tweaks possible and yet offers in camera HDR, more video recording capability, dual card slots (SD and CF capability) and suppressed shutter noise levels.
The 5D Mark III is capable of 1080p HD video, with 24, 25 or 30 frames per second. But, of course, what interested me more was its ISO capability of 25,600 expandable to 102,400.

PERFORMANCE

One of the key parameters that most photographers look out for is low noise at high ISOs. This is an absolute necessity for sports photography, and for getting good results indoors and outdoors at night.
I set the ISO at 12,800 and photographed my jet black great Dane with a white snout against a cream toned wall lit only by a single tube light in the room. The white balance was set to Auto. The result as seen on the camera’s 3.2-inch LCD screen was excellent, the blacks and whites reproduced faithfully without a tinge of a colour cast. After checking the result on my iMac, I found the noise levels to be within acceptable levels.
After stepping up the ISO to 25,600, I took the camera to the beach near by. The auto white balance couldn’t correct the colours taken under the street light and the auto focus couldn’t handle the low light near the waves. However, the high ISO could handle the low light on the manual focus mode.
The next set of pictures was taken in good evening light at a farmhouse holding an event for pets. With the ISO set at 640, the focus was fast so was the continuous shooting at 6 frames per second, the colours and contrast were good, but the pictures required a bit of sharpening.
The final test was at a music concert where I shot with ISO`s ranging between 2,000 to 25,600. Although the noise levels was low the images got progressively soft and a bit of out of camera sharpening was required and this resulted in a progressive build up in noise levels and vignetting at the corners was more pronounced
I tried the highlight tone priority on a bright day on white benches, and the dynamic range of the camera was sufficient to hold all highlight tones, and the highlight tone priority mode could not contribute much by way of (highlight) tonal range addition. The dynamic lighting function, which builds shadow and darker mid tones information works well as it should. Though, I prefer to turn it off to preserve the original lighting contrast.
For RAW shooters, who can afford post production, the image quality is excellent. The camera comes only with a monoaural mike input, so for sound, seperate Digital stereo sound recording gear may be necessary.
In still photo mode, low contrast images do not render too well, though the camera responds immaculately and quickly to any situation, largely because of the new Digic 5+ processor. Low contrast images tend to go a bit too soft and appear muddy. Even in the default settings, sharpening artefacts are visible and at higher ISOs, the image rendering is not optimal, with details getting obscured especially in low contrast areas. The absence of an AF illuminator makes auto focus functions difficult in low light.

VERDICT

On the whole, despite some of the issues, this is a sizeable upgrade by Canon. Though, I was bit disappointed also by the lower image size. I expected Canon to bring out at least a 25 or 30 MP camera with full video capabilities. This camera is perfect for some one who already has a good stack of Canon lenses and seriously wants to upgrade and for the shooter who does both still photography in RAW mode and a bit of Video shooting.
In short : Impressive low light performance in RAW, particularly if the scene is ‘contrasty’. Images are eminently usable upto 25,600 ASA.
At 16,000 ASA, blacks are very good and the image is smooth. From 5,000 ASA all the way up to 12,500 ASA, images are silk smooth with very little noise.
In JPEG mode though, the de-noising feature overcompensates and tends to create unnatural rendering.
Love – low noise at very high ISO levels, good image processor
Hate – no AF assist light

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 and Yoga 13 price in India set

The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 and Yoga 13 price in India is out over a month after the Chinese company launched a range of Android smartphones. Living up to their name, the devices are convertibles that twist, flip and split as per users’ preference and convenience.
Although both slabs have entered the market together at CES 2012, there aren’t many components we can say are similar in them. The IdeaPad Yoga 11 has been optimized to run the Windows RT operating system. From the inside, it is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, but the clock speed at which the CPU runs hasn’t been revealed.
We know that dimensions of 298mm x 204mm x 15.6mm also engulf 2GB of DDR3L RAM and an Nvidia GeForce graphic card. Resting boldly on the tablet’s surface is 11.6-inch HD 5-point capacitive display.
Besides, the slate-cum-PC is available with a 32GB or a 64GB of SSD and it incorporates a 1MP 720p HD camera. Also included are Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth, to satiate connectivity needs and the battery life is said to last for 13 hours.
Next up on the pedestal is the IdeaPad Yoga 13 which is driven by the third generation Intel Core processors. It has not only been built to support Windows 8, but also can run Windows 8 Pro just as well. Moreover, a 13.3-inch HD+ touchscreen with IPS technology proffers high resolution visuals.
The hybrid allows 128GB of storage and similar to the aforementioned device, it is endowed with a 1MP 720p HD snapper. Naturally, it comes with connectivity features like Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n as well as Bluetooth to enable wireless sharing and possesses a battery life of approximately 8 hours.

Apple sells 2m iPhones in China in 3 days

Apple says it sold more than two million iPhone 5s in China in their first three days of availability, setting a record for that market.
The iPhone 5, which launched in China on Friday, will be available in more than 100 countries by the end of December.
The phone first went on sale on September 21 in nine countries, including the US and Australia, with more than five million sold in the first three days.

That also set a record, but it only beat last year's iPhone 4S launch by a small margin, falling short of some analysts' expectations.
Apple shares hit an all-time high of $US705.07 that day, but in the months since the stock has plunged about 28 per cent.
On Sunday, Citi analyst Glen Yeung cut his rating for the company to "Neutral" from "Buy", questioning the strength of iPhone 5 demand and saying it's unlikely Apple shares will rally any time soon.
Apple Inc shares fell $US6.85 to $US502.94 in premarket trading on Monday.

iTunes India Review

If you talk to most media-junkies, they'll tell you that morals only come second when it comes to downloading media. It's lack of affordable original content that drives the piracy industry in India in the first place. It's some progress then that Apple Inc decided to finally launch an India-based iTunes app last week. I checked it out to see if it's an option that most of us will keep coming back to time and again. The new iTunes launched is downloadable from the company's official Web site as a 85 MB file. The download took us about 20 minutes, and once downloaded the setup was fairly quick and simple.

MUSIC

All media categories — Music, Movies, App Store, Books and Podcasts are lined right at the top of the interface. I checked out a couple of music albums first. Based on genres, you can lookup your favourite artists or albums in this section. Being India-based, the first category on display is `Bollywood Music', which actually includes film audio albums across regional film industries in India. I was actually glad to see that prices, even for the latest releases, were fairly reasonable (considering once I purchase them, I can play them across multiple Apple devices.) Costs, predictably, went even lower with older movie albums. For example, six soundtracks from Mani Ratnam's 1995 hit 'Bombay' were available for Rs 72. If you want just a couple of songs, then you have to cough up a meagre Rs 12 for one! Not bad considering it's the original stuff!

MOVIES

Similarly, choices are aplenty in the Movies section as well. Almost all the movies are priced at Rs 190 (to buy) and about Rs 80 (to rent) The Dirty Picture in HD, for example, cost about Rs 390 to buy and about Rs 120 to rent but Eat, Pray and Love cost about 100 bucks more to buy. iTunes in the Cloud lets you download your previously purchased iTunes music to all your iOS devices at no additional cost, and new music purchases can be downloaded automatically to all your devices.
There’s also iTunes U where you can check out educational resources. I took a small 5-minute Spanish language class just for the heck of it! It’s fun and useful to have quick access to a bunch of resources like these.
While trying out all the sections, the loading times were pretty decent on our office broadband connection. The new India-based iTunes thus makes available a lot of media which we wouldn’t have had access to at the rates they are being marketed for. Not if we wanted to stay legit, anyway!

Now, solar-powered bonsai to charge your mobile

LONDON: A French designer has created a unique bonzai tree that will not only look pretty on your coffee table but also charge your mobile and other gadgets using solar energy.

Created by designer Vivien Muller, 'The Electree+' has 27 miniature silicon solar panels - or 'leaves' - that can be arranged in any style the users want to create their own unique tree.

The designer said he was inspired to make the product after observing real trees, noticing that their leaves acted as natural solar panels.

The base of the device conceals a battery that stores the solar energy and at full capacity it can hold enough power to charge an iPad twice and can charge a phone in just four hours, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

The tree conceals a USB connection underneath its wood-topped base unit.

Muller is waiting to receive 400 presale orders for the product before commencing production.

The bonsai tree will cost 283 pounds.

Windows PC sales in US down 21% in Nov: report

Consumer sales of Windows-powered personal computers fell 21 percent overall last month, according to a leading retail research firm, indicating a lackluster debut for Microsoft Corp’s Windows 8 operating system, which many in the industry had hoped would revive slack PC sales.
Since the launch of Windows 8 on 26 October, Windows laptop sales are down 24 percent, while desktop sales are down 9 percent compared with the same period last year, said NPD Group, which tracks computer sales weekly using data supplied by retailers.
Usually a new Microsoft release boosts PC sales, as many consumers hold off from purchases for several months prior so they can get hold of the latest software immediately.
“After just four weeks on the market, it’s still early to place blame on Windows 8 for the ongoing weakness in the PC market,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. “We still have the whole holiday selling season ahead of us, but clearly Windows 8 did not prove to be the impetus for a sales turnaround some had hoped for.”
Windows 8 ‘s debut has been lackluster. Getty Images
NPD’s data does not include Microsoft’s new Surface tablet, which is only available in its own stores, nor does it take account of sales of PCs to businesses, which has recently been a much stronger market.
But if the trend is borne out over the rest of the holiday shopping season, it would be a huge disappointment for Microsoft, as well as PC makers such as Dell Inc , HP and Lenovo.
Since launch, Windows 8 accounted for only 58 percent of Windows computing device unit sales, compared to the 83 percent Windows 7 accounted for at the same point after its launch in 2009, NPD said, partly caused by poor back-to-school sales that left many Windows 7 PCs on retailers’ shelves.
One patch of light for Microsoft is strong sales of touchscreen Windows 8 laptops, which accounted for 6 percent of Windows laptop sales, according to NPD.
It is still unclear how successful Microsoft’s Windows 8 will be in the long term. The touch-optimized, tablet-friendly system was designed to appeal to younger users with a colorful, app-based interface, but has confused some traditional Windows customers more used to keyboard and mouse commands. Beneath the new interface design, it does not offer any radical new computing power.
On Monday, a top Windows executive said Microsoft had sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses in the month since the launch. That is ahead of Windows 7 at the same stage, but it was not clear how many of those were pre-orders, discounted upgrades, or bulk sales to PC makers.
According to tech research firm StatCounter, about 1 percent of the world’s 1.5 billion or so personal computers — making a total of around 15 million — are actually running Windows 8.

India starts issuing of IPv6 addresses

"This is to test compatibility of hardware and software that has to be in place. In next couple of months we will launch industrial grade of IPv6,” said Govind, CEO of National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), in a report Monday by Hindu Business Line.
IRINN is issuing the addresses starting at INR 21,999 (US$396) compared to the prevalent rate of around INR 66,000 (US$1,188)  in Asia Pacific region, noted the news daily.
IRINN was set up by state-run NIXI, and is recognized by APNIC, one of the five authorized bodies for issuing Internet addresses, to do so in India.
The Internet addresses under the present version IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4), are limited and service providers often assign single IP address to many users, making it difficult to identify the end user, noted the report.
"The number of IPv6 addresses available is enormous. ISPs (Internet Service Providers) can allocate an IP address to their users. People can be easily identified if they are using IPv6," said Sanjaya, director for services and operations at APNIC.

Nikon 1 V2 is Nikon 1 V with a complete makeover

The entry-level J model in the Nikon 1 series of interchangeable-lens cameras may have received some ho-hum tweaks, but Nikon has completely revamped the higher-end V model -- likely in response to criticisms of some odd design choices in the Nikon 1 V1. Let's just say that in the press release for the V2 the words "friendly" and "familiar" popped up several times.
On one hand, it's got a huge grip versus the no-grip body of the V1, and it's got a flash built in, both of which definitely help. But I find the new design clunky-looking, and of necessity it's gotten bigger (though I'm not yet sure how much bigger). The mode dial has moved to the top of the camera, but more importantly it now has the usual set of manual and semimanual exposure modes (PASM) right there where they belong, as well as a real adjustment dial.
Of course, it still incorporates the small CX-size sensor, but at a higher resolution than before; that breaks parity with the J2, which probably helps Nikon differentiate better between the two models. As a reminder, here's how the CX sensor compares with those in other cameras:
Enhanced capabilities include a two-shot HDR mode; the ability to save only one shot (rather than five) in its Smart Photo Selector mode; and an extended Motion Snapshot mode, increased to 4 seconds (10 seconds if you forgo the embedded JPEG) with the ability to string multiple clips together in-camera. There's also a new and somewhat intriguing Best Moment Capture Mode, an alternative to burst shooting, which buffers the last 1.3 seconds of a shutter press so that you can play it back slowly and choose the desired frame to save.
