Dell launches XPS 12 convertible, Latitude 10 tablet and Latitude 6340u ultrabook

First up is the XPS 12 convertible. This, when docked, looks like a fairly traditional laptop/ultrabook for the most part. But the flip hinge allows you to release the touchscreen display and use the device like a full-fledged tablet. The display is a full HD (1920 x 1080 pixel) one.
Dell says, “The touchscreen display is designed to take advantage of the Windows 8 operating system advances for touch interaction”. The XPS 12 convertible’s chassis is a mixture of machined aluminum and carbon fibre, while the display has the Gorilla Glass add-on. Users will have the choice of a Core i5 and a Core i7 processor, 4GB or 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB SSD. The price of the XPS 12 convertible starts at Rs. 90,490.

The Dell Latitude 6340u ultrabook is a refresh of the existing Latitude ultrabook. The new design is 33 percent slimmer and 16 percent lighter than Dell’s current 14-inch Latitudenotebook. Users have the option of selecting the 14-inch display with any one of the two resolution types – 1366 x 768 pixels and 1600 x 900 pixels. This ultrabook will come with Windows 8 preloaded. Dell says that this ultrabook will be available from the middle of November, with prices starting at Rs. 69,990.
The Latitude 10 tablet is also aimed at businesses with what Dell calls “easy management and security and a swappable battery for go-anywhere productivity”. The tablet can easily be integrated with most existing remote management systems that organizations use. The 10.1-inch display has a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution and gets the Gorilla Glass treatment as well. Dell Data Protection will allow users to encrypt the data on the hard drive as well as block access via any external devices. The Latitude 10 tablet will be available starting end of November with price tag fixed at Rs. 42,490.
Commenting on the occasion, Mr. P. Krishnakumar, Executive Director, Marketing, Dell Indiasaid, “The combination of new Dell hardware and Windows OS will allow customers to create and consume content in new and exciting ways which makes technology more accessible and intuitive.” He further added, “The new products launched today are all about maximizing the balance between end user preferences, productivity and IT control, backed by robust customer service, aimed at helping users and IT departments navigate the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) landscape.”
Quite frankly, the XPS 12 convertible is one device that really excites us. It may be aimed at the business user, but for the kind of functionality it offers, we would not be surprised if it appeals to a wider demographic of users. And we have seen the amazing build quality of the XPS 13 and the XPS 14 ultrabooks already, and with similar materials used on this as well, happiness beckons! Windows 8 should be a lot more fun to use with the touchscreen capabilities.

Nikon 1 V2 is Nikon 1 V with a complete makeover

The entry-level J model in the Nikon 1 series of interchangeable-lens cameras may have received some ho-hum tweaks, but Nikon has completely revamped the higher-end V model -- likely in response to criticisms of some odd design choices in the Nikon 1 V1. Let's just say that in the press release for the V2 the words "friendly" and "familiar" popped up several times.
On one hand, it's got a huge grip versus the no-grip body of the V1, and it's got a flash built in, both of which definitely help. But I find the new design clunky-looking, and of necessity it's gotten bigger (though I'm not yet sure how much bigger). The mode dial has moved to the top of the camera, but more importantly it now has the usual set of manual and semimanual exposure modes (PASM) right there where they belong, as well as a real adjustment dial.
Of course, it still incorporates the small CX-size sensor, but at a higher resolution than before; that breaks parity with the J2, which probably helps Nikon differentiate better between the two models. As a reminder, here's how the CX sensor compares with those in other cameras:
Enhanced capabilities include a two-shot HDR mode; the ability to save only one shot (rather than five) in its Smart Photo Selector mode; and an extended Motion Snapshot mode, increased to 4 seconds (10 seconds if you forgo the embedded JPEG) with the ability to string multiple clips together in-camera. There's also a new and somewhat intriguing Best Moment Capture Mode, an alternative to burst shooting, which buffers the last 1.3 seconds of a shutter press so that you can play it back slowly and choose the desired frame to save.

iPad-mini is a premium product, says Apple's Phil Schiller

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple marketing wizard Phil Schiller defended the $329 price of the new iPad mini tablet, saying consumers will be willing to pay for quality not found in less expensive devices from rivals like Google and Amazon.
With competition growing from tablets that are smaller and less expensive than Apple's wildly popular iPads, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cookand Schiller on Tuesday took the wraps off the new 7.9-inch tablet, which essentially has most of the functions and features of the full-size iPad but in a smaller package.
While the news of the launch was welcomed by Wall Street, many analysts were concerned that the steeper-than-expected price might turn away some cost conscious consumers.
Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD tablets are both priced starting at $199. While the iPad mini is significantly more expensive, it is also lighter, thinner and provides more screen space than rival offerings.
Asked by Reuters whether the iPad mini's price could make it too expensive for some cost-conscious shoppers who have been attracted to the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, Schiller said he believes consumers will see Apple's smaller tablet as a premium product worth paying for.
"The iPad is far and away the most successful product in its category. The most affordable product we've made so far was $399 and people were choosing that over those devices," Schiller said.
"And now you can get a device that's even more affordable at $329 in this great new form, and I think a lot of customers are going to be very excited about that," Schiller said.
Amazon made inroads into the realm of 7-inch tablets last year with the launch of its Kindle Fire and has said its latest Kindle Fire HD is the best-selling product on the company's website since the device went on sale more than a month ago.
The Internet retailer is believed to sell the product close to its cost, but the Fire HD is part of Amazon's strategy to attract mobile customers to its website.
Internet advertiser Google is similarly believed to sell its Nexus 7, manufactured by Asustek, near cost.
Apple is under pressure to defend its dominant position in tablets, a market it created with the launch of the first iPad in 2010. The intensity in the marketplace was evident in Tuesday's unveiling of the iPad mini as Schiller took the unusual step of doing a side-by-side comparison of the smaller iPad and Google's Nexus 7 tablet.
"Others have tried to make tablets smaller than the iPad and they've failed miserably," Schiller said during the event. "These are not great experiences."
The launch of the iPad mini, at the California Theater in San Jose, was mostly a Schiller show with the veteran Apple executive responsible for all of its marketing and advertising strategy introducing all of the new products, including a fourth generation 10-inch iPad, a 13-inch Macbook Pro with a so-called retina screen and a new iMac.
Apple's presentations typically feature a host of executives and even some external game company executives, but Schiller on Tuesday only shared the stage with Cook, who later mingled in a crowded room as journalists and analysts jostled in a crowded room to try out the new gadgets.
Analysts have worried that challenging the likes of Amazon in smaller and less expensive tablets could hurt Apple's prized profit margins. Apple's gross margin on the full-sized iPad is between 23 percent and 32 percent for US sales.
Despite concerns that the high price tag may curb demand, analysts were still bullish of the company, which will releases its fiscal fourth-quarter results on Thursday.
"In spite of concerns about the price we would be buyers of the stock even in front of earnings this Thursday as we do believe that customers will pay a premium for an Apple tablet," said Shebly Seyrafi, an analyst at FBN Securities.
