Apple to resume iPhone, iPad online sales in Germany

Apple Inc said it was cleared to resume selling older models of its iPhone and 3G-based iPadsvia its German online store on Friday, after the suspension of an injunction won by Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc in December.

"All iPad and iPhone models will be back on sale through Apple's online store in Germany shortly," Apple spokesman Alan Hely said, adding that Apple was granted a suspension of the injunction.

He declined to say when exactly the sales would resume. Motorola was not immediately available for comment. A regional German court in Mannheim ruled on December 9 that Apple Sales International -- the European sales subsidiary of Apple in Cork, Ireland -- must stop selling or distributing mobile devices that infringe certain Motorola cellular communications patents.

That forced Apple to stop briefly the sale of iPhone 3G and 4 models and 3G/UMTS-based iPads on its German online store on Friday.

Motorola Mobility has said it had been negotiating with Apple and offering the company "reasonable licensing terms and conditions since 2007."

Apple spokesman Hely said on Friday: "Motorola repeatedly refuses to license this patent to Apple on reasonable terms, despite having declared it an industry standard patent seven years ago."

Apple retail stores and authorised resellers had not stopped selling the devices, he said.

On Apple's German http://store.apple.com/de site, attempts to order iPhone 3G and 4 models and 3G/UMTS-based iPads on Friday produced a "currently not available" message. The latest iPhone version 4S and WIFI-only iPads, however, were available online.

Apple is locked in mobile patent infringement battles with a number of companies, includingSamsung Electronics Co Ltd and HTC Corp, in several countries. It recently failed in a court bid to stop US sales of Samsung's Galaxy line of products.

Hackers intercept FBI, Scotland Yard call

LONDON:They trade jokes, chuckle and talk shop about a hacker plot called "Project Mayhem."

But at the heart of the conference call between theFBI and Scotland Yard was a strategy aimed at bringing down the hacking collective known as Anonymous, which has launched a series of embarrassing attacks across the Internet.

Unfortunately for the cyber sleuths, the hackers were listening, too _ and now so is the rest of the world.

Anonymous published the roughly 15-minute-long recording of the call to the Internet early on Friday, gloating in a Twitter message that "the FBI might be curious how we're able to continuously read their internal comms for some time now."

The FBI said the information "was intended for law enforcement officers only and was illegally obtained" but that no FBI systems were breached. It added that "a criminal investigation is under way to identify and hold accountable those responsible."

It's not entirely clear how the hackers got their hands on the recording, which appears to have been edited to bleep out the names of some of the suspects being discussed.

Amid the material published by Anonymous was an email purportedly sent by an FBI agent to international law enforcement agencies. It invites his foreign counterparts to join the call to "discuss the ongoing investigations related to Anonymous ... and other associated splinter groups" on Jan 17 at 4pm.

The message _ addressed to law enforcement officials in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden and France _ contained a phone number and password for accessing the call.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the matter is under investigation, said that authorities were looking at the possibility that the message was intercepted after a private email account of one of the invited participants was compromised.

Graham Cluley, an expert with data security company Sophos, said that knowing the time, telephone number and passcode for the call meant it was all too easy to spy on the investigators.

"Even my ironing lady could have rung in and silently listened to the call just like Anonymous did," Cluley said in an email, calling the fiasco "highly embarrassing for the cops."

Humble Bundle for Android includes mobile and home versions of Anomaly, World of Goo, more

No smartphone is safe from cheap indie games (unless it's a Blackberry). Just as the Steam mobile app goes out of beta, allowing unfortunate impulse purchases from iOS or Android devices, the Humble Indie Bundle has announced its first Android release, available now.

Under the same "pay whatever, support charity" pricing scheme as previous Humble Bundles, the Humble Bundle for Android offers Android versions of Anomaly: Warzone Earth, Osmos, and Edge, with a bonus copy of World of Goo available to anyone who exceeds the average payment.

All of these games are cross-platform, so you get them on your Android phone and Windows, OSX, and Linux. That's a pretty appealing deal for the price of however much you end up paying.

Public sector ITI to bid for one million Aakash 2

Having burnt it hands once with a private player, the HRD ministry has decided to look at public sector enterprises to manufacture one million Aakash 2 tablets, the enhanced version of world' cheapest machine.

The HRD ministry, which has developed prototype of Aakash, wants thepublic sector Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) to participate in the bid to supply Aakash 2 tablets from April this year.
The ministry will require 220 million tablets in the coming years to fulfill its promise to provide a tablet to every college and university students. The ministry wants to achieve the target by 2014.
For this, the Aakash tablets will have to be sourced from multiple sources and the ministry wants to bank on public sector companies as its experience with Datawind, the company required to supply one lakh tablets by March, had not been very good, government sources said.
The ministry found many functional problems with Datawind' tablets tested by IIT students. The ministry was also not happy with the company selling Aakash tablets in the market before supplying it to the government.
"We have already rejected 3,000 tablets on quality," a ministry official said.
What has prompted the government to look for public sector was inability shown by Datawind to supply Aakash 2 without cost escalation.
The new test specification proposed for Aakash 2 by Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan includes operation at -20 degrees, be water proof including heavy rains, and can with stand steep and sudden drops.
The new tablet will have a microprocessor of 1.2 gega hertz (Ghz), five times faster than Aakash 1 and a minimum battery life of eight hours.
Datawind founder Suneet Tuli had claimed that such a tablet can cost not less than $1,500. Ministry officials said it has not been decided to debar Datawind from future bidding.
HRD and telecom minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday held a meeting with public sector telecom companies including ITI to gear them up for supplying Aakash 2 at $35.
"We want public sector to participate in the bid to have a balance between public and private sector. It could also help in revival of these companies," a senior government official said

Five facts about Google's content filtering

  1. New Delhi: Less than a week after a similar move by micro-blogging site Twitter, Internet major google has unveiled plans to make content on its blogger platfrom selectively available, depanding on the top five facts you should know on google's move:

    1. What is it? Google has announced it will start redirecting visitors from certain countries to country specific website. For example, Indian visitors to blogname.blogspot.com may be redirected to blogname.blogspot.in

    2. Why? This can be seen as a direct response to request from government across the world urging Google to filter content they deem objectonable. Having this redirection in place would allow Google to stop people from a particular country accessing specific websites without impacting users in other countries.

    3. How does it work? For example, it the Indian government finds the content at blogname.blogspot.com/post.html objectionable, it may approach Google and have it blocked for access via the blogname.blogspot.in domain. With all traffic coming from india automatically redirected, this means even if someone from India tries to visit directly, they will not able to see the blocked content(subject to the workarounds mentioned below).

    4. what services are impacted? While all details are't available yet, it seems this 'initiative' is limited to Google's blogging platfrom. other services like Orkut or Google Plus do not seem imacted at this stage, though that might change at a later date. Also, website with a custom URL.e.g.www.mvblog.com Hosted using the Blogger patfrom will remain unaffected.

    5. Workarounds: Visitos can see the US version of any blog by visiting blogname.blogspot.in/ncr. NCR stabd for No Country Redirect and san be used across all google properties to view the US version of the site instead of local one.
