Samsung's Galaxy Note to hit AT&T stores Feb. 19 for $300

The Galaxy Note smartphone with tablet features and a stylus hits AT&T stores Feb. 19 for $299.99 and a two-year agreement, the carrier announced Monday.

The device, with a 5.3 in.-touchscreen, will be sold in blue and white and will run over the carrier's 4G LTE network. AT&T will start taking pre-orders online on Sunday for delivery on Feb. 17, two days before in-store sales begin.
Samsung and AT&T have said the device is a smartphone-tablet melding with its large, high-resolution screen (1280 x 800) and its S Pen stylus.
Portrait artists at the recent 2012 CES trade show showed how they could use the stylus to make drawings, such as caricatures, holding the Note like a pad of paper and picking colors and brush widths with the stylus.
It's the world's first 5.3-in. HD Super Amoled screen, making it among the largest screens on a smartphone, AT&T said.
AT&T's Jeff Bradley, senior vice president of devices, said the Galaxy Note smartphone is designed to replace multiple devices that users often carry.
The Note is an Android 2.3 device, with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, and an 8 megapixel rear-facing, auto-focus camera and a 2 megapixel front-facing camera. Video is recorded at 1080p and 30 frames per second.

India's $45 tablet still selling like crazy

The University of Mumbai has received 25,000 requests for India's first low-cost Android tablet, dubbed Aakash, with more requests expected for the device which has already seen over 1 million orders from commercial buyers since its debut. The tablet reportedly will cost students a subsidized rate priced at 1,138 rupees (US$23).
An official from the university added that modifications would be made to the device to incorporate the needs of the universities and central government. "The initial product had a lot of complaints from users. They are being modified now to suit everybody's requirements," he said.
The Indian government first introduced the Aakash tablet in October last year, unveiling a 7-inch touchscreen tablet running on Android 2.2 and featuring Wi-Fi, multimedia and videoconferencing capabilities. The government said the tablet was targeted at local students and would likely be sold through universities and colleges instead of retail channels. Spokesperson for the human resources development ministry, Mamata Varma, then told AFP that the device cost 2,200 rupees (US$45), while a separate report by Reuters said students would pay a subsidized rate.Earlier in January, orders for Aakash totaled 1.4 million units just two weeks after it was made commercially available for sale online.

Ultrabooks

2012 is going to be an year of Ultrabooks

If 2011 was the year of the tablet, then 2012 will see ultrabooks trying to corner its market share. The new, slim, gorgeous-looking machines will try and wrest back from the slate what it wrenched away from netbooks, laptops and PCs over the last couple of years. For some time now, laptops have languished in terms of aesthetic design. They are thick, heavy and built of plastic. No wonder the form factor easily succumbed to the svelte appeal of tablets. Ultrabooks are Intel's attempt, in partnership with PC makers such as Acer and Lenovo, to make the laptop sexy again.

In fact, at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the US, every PC manufacturer worth its salt was showing off its own version of slick ultrabooks - hard to imagine that the term was coined by Intel only in June 2011. To promote these slim machines, the microchip behemoth (whose products power more than 80% of all computers) has set aside a fund of $300 million; and analysts believe that by 2015, nearly 40% of all laptops will be ultrabooks.

Build quality and design:Ultrabooks are defined by their slim design, and-at just 0.7 inches at its thickest point and weighing 1.4kgs-the S3 meets this criteria. Add to that, a brushed aluminum lid that is impervious to fingerprints , and you have a device that is a head and shoulder above the usual black and grey laptops of yore.

Screen, keyboard and touchpad:The Acer machine sports a 13.3-inch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels - a bit low for such a premium product. Couple that with poor viewing angles and colours that lack punch and vibrancy, and you have a display that leaves a lot to be desired.

User experience:The size and weight of the S3 makes it a wonderful companion for those who need to carry their laptops everywhere. And while its low-voltage Sandy Bridge processor is not as fast as standard processors, the machine does not feel sluggish whether you are launching a program, switching between tasks or even playing high-quality full HD videos.Despite lacking an SSD, the laptop wakes up from sleep mode instantly.

Specification:Intel Core i5 2467M, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD and 20GB flash storage for instant resume, 13.3-inch screen (1366 x 768), 1.4kgs

Sony's lovely Xperia S may land on AT&T soon Read more: http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-57367727-85/sonys-lovely-xperia-s-may-land-on-at-t-soon/#ixzz1kuq2cuOW

Sony's lovely Xperia S may land on AT&T soon

A stunning Android phone that really does look like it arrived from the far future, Sony's gorgeous Xperia S is likely to hit AT&T's airwaves.
New reports assert that the Xperia S is making its way through FCC approval with a quad-band GSM/UTMS/HSPA radio (850, 900, 1900, 2100MHz). As tech blog Engadget deduces, that sounds a whole lot like the Xperia S is destined for AT&T and sadly not T-Mobile.
That's a real bummer, since all the hot handsets these days seem to be landing at Verizon or AT&T: Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, Droid 4, Nokia Lumia 900, and Sony Xperia Ion. Add to this the Xperia S, and what's a T-Mo subscriber to do but nab an unlocked device to experience some gadget love?
To be fair, it's getting harder and harder to design a smartphone that stands out from the growing Android crowd. Sony, though, beat the odds with the Xperia S. It's distinctively styled complete with a glowing clear band on its base. The phone's 12-megapixel camera sounds alluring, too. I just hope the glory days of legendary T-Mobile handsets like the G1, G2, and even Galaxy S II aren't drawing to a close.
